San Diego artists reflect on identity, borders and America's 250th birthday in new exhibition

Two San Diego-based artists, Eden DeLaVara and Marcela Alarcón López, have opened a joint exhibition titled "Fragmented Stories" at Gallery 201 in Arts District Liberty Station. The show, which combines painting and textiles, explores themes of identity, history, and the body as women of color. Both artists completed the Emerging Artist Residency at Arts District Liberty Station last year, and the exhibition serves as the culmination of that program. López, who crossed the border daily from Tijuana to San Diego during her residency, incorporates themes of surveillance and border experience into her work, while DeLaVara reflects on her mixed heritage and the voids in her family history.

The exhibition matters because it highlights the lived experiences of artists navigating the U.S.-Mexico border region, offering a personal and political commentary on identity, migration, and national belonging. As the United States approaches its 250th birthday, both artists express frustration with the country's progress on issues of race and inclusion. The show also underscores the importance of local arts residency programs in fostering connections between artists from transborder communities, providing a platform for voices that are often marginalized in mainstream art discourse.
