Damariscotta gallery exhibits photographer’s Maine snapshots - Portland Press Herald

River Arts in Damariscotta, Maine, presents photographer Daniel O’Leary’s solo exhibition, “The Damariscotta River, Winslow Homer in Maine, and A Few Photographic Memories,” running from June 4-24 in the River Room. O’Leary, a former reporter for The Detroit News and later an art museum director, moved to Maine and restored the historic Winslow Homer Studio at Prouts Neck, then began photographing landscapes that inspired Homer and other artists, including Monhegan Island. His work captures Maine’s coastal scenery with a documentarian’s eye and art-historical sensibility.

This exhibition matters because it connects contemporary photography to Maine’s rich artistic heritage, particularly the legacy of Winslow Homer, one of America’s most celebrated painters. O’Leary’s images create a visual dialogue between past and present, inviting viewers to see familiar coastal views through the lens of both history and personal exploration. It also highlights the role of small regional galleries like River Arts in sustaining local cultural engagement and preserving the stories behind iconic American landscapes.
