Columbus Arts Festival showcases national and local artists

The Columbus Arts Festival, a longstanding event celebrating handmade art for over half a century, returns to the Scioto Riverfront in Columbus, Ohio. The festival features 230 artists selected by a blind jury, showcasing 16 mediums including painting, jewelry, ceramics, and printmaking, with a strict ban on AI-generated or commercially produced work. Organizer Jami Goldstein of the Greater Columbus Arts Council highlights the festival's history, including a 2011 relocation due to a severe storm, and its commitment to supporting emerging artists through mentorship. Local artists like JD Davison and JD Shipengrover of Lab Partners are among this year's participants, blending traditional silversmith techniques with modern technology.

The festival matters because it reinforces the value of human creativity in an era increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence and digital reproduction. By enforcing handmade-only standards and offering $21,000 in prize money across 12 categories, it provides a vital platform for independent artists to build audiences and client bases. The event also strengthens Columbus's cultural identity, drawing artists from 31 states and three countries, and underscores the role of community arts organizations in preserving traditional craftsmanship while adapting to contemporary trends.
