Local artist’s legacy on display at Black Heritage Gallery

An exhibition honoring the late Lake Charles artist Parris Duhon has opened at the Black Heritage Gallery in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Duhon, who passed away in January 2025 at age 53, is remembered through 28 pieces of his artwork, including a standout piece titled "Mardi Gras Cinderella." Gallery curator Jeanine Blaney, a former classmate of Duhon's, organized the exhibit to share his work with the public for the first time, noting that Duhon wanted viewers to see themselves in his vivid, detailed paintings featuring animals and intricate designs. The exhibit runs through July 31.

The exhibition matters because it brings posthumous recognition to a local artist whose work had not been publicly displayed during his lifetime, highlighting the importance of community galleries in preserving and celebrating regional artistic legacies. It also underscores the role of personal connections—Blaney was a former classmate—in curating meaningful tributes that honor an artist's vision and allow the public to engage with his unique perspective, including his alter ego "Clive the Cat."
