I 20 anni del Forte di Bard in Valle d’Aosta. Da presidio militare sabaudo a polo culturale che ha cambiato l’identità del territorio

The Forte di Bard in Valle d'Aosta, Italy, celebrated its 20th anniversary in early 2026, marking two decades since its transformation from a 19th-century Savoy military fortress into a multidisciplinary cultural hub. After a decade-long restoration from 1995 to 2005, the complex opened to the public in 2006, now housing the Museum of Fortifications and Borders, the Museum of the Alps, and the Le Alpi dei ragazzi children's museum, alongside numerous temporary exhibitions and events.

This milestone matters because the Forte di Bard represents a landmark case of cultural and territorial regeneration. Over 20 years, it attracted over 5 million visitors, shifting the local economy from its former industrial and agricultural base—once reliant on suppliers to Fiat and Olivetti—toward tourism. The fortress has become a recognized model for integrating historical heritage, regional identity, and cultural innovation, transforming a transit area into a major cultural destination that reshaped the economic landscape of the Aosta Valley.
