Colen Lumley, an architect, critic, and painter who helped shape postwar Cambridge architecture, has died at age 93. He was a partner to modernist architect Sir Leslie Martin, contributing to projects such as the Faculty of Music building at Cambridge University, the Museum of Modern Art Oxford, and the Gulbenkian Foundation gallery in Lisbon. After his architectural career, he devoted himself to painting, exhibiting through Cambridge Open Studios.
Lumley's significance lies in his multifaceted contributions to Cambridge's built environment and civic discourse. He co-founded the Cambridge Urban Forum, chaired the Cambridge Association of Architects, and co-edited the Cambridge Architecture Gazette, fostering debate on planning and design. His work exemplifies the integration of modernist architecture with community engagement, and his later turn to painting underscores a lifelong commitment to visual creativity.
