Advance Edukos held its fourth First Thursday Art Exhibition at Rocklands Library on June 4, selling artwork created by children and young adults in its art therapy programme. All proceeds go directly to the young artists, according to founder Wendy Abrahams, who noted the programme's sixth anniversary. The exhibition featured prize-winning brothers Kayden (16) and Mason (10) Mabee, who both won third place in the Norval Foundation's art competition in 2025. Unsold art will be available on Advance Edukos's Facebook page and at an end-of-year graduation exhibition.
This story matters because it highlights how art therapy can foster emotional growth and provide economic empowerment for vulnerable youth in South Africa. The programme, supported by local government and sponsors, demonstrates the tangible benefits of community-based arts initiatives, from helping a non-verbal young man resume writing to giving young artists a platform to earn income and build career aspirations. It underscores the role of art in personal development and social impact beyond traditional gallery settings.
