Exploring Everyday Spaces Through Surrealist Art

Ekfrasi – Yianna Grammatopoulou Gallery in Athens will present "A Bathroom and Other… Unexpected Human Stories," a solo exhibition by the artist Looper, running from June 11 to July 4, 2026. Curated by art historian Yannis Bolis, the show features sculptural installations, symbolic constructions, and large-scale ink drawings, with the centerpiece being a life-size bathroom installation made from cardboard and plexiglass that reimagines domestic space through a surrealist lens. The artist also employs aluminum, steel, plexiglass, and fluorescent light in box-like sculptures, while the drawings draw on influences from pre-Columbian culture, religion, mysticism, comics, graffiti, and street art.

This exhibition matters because it demonstrates how contemporary artists continue to mine the surrealist tradition to transform mundane, everyday environments into uncanny and thought-provoking experiences. By using unconventional materials like cardboard and plexiglass alongside light and shadow, Looper challenges viewers to reconsider familiar spaces and narratives, blending humor, mystery, and social commentary. The show also highlights the ongoing vitality of Athens' gallery scene and the role of curatorial vision in framing emerging artistic practices.
