Atlanta photographer and artist Artemus Jenkins is presenting his exhibition “From Afrique, With Love” at Old Rabbit Gallery and My Garage ATL from June 12 through July 7. The show features photographs from Jenkins’s travels in West Africa, beginning with a 2019 trip to Ghana during the Year of the Return, and includes a collaboration with photographer Nyeusi Mwezi, whose images from the Gambia, Senegal, and Ghana create a parallel narrative. Jenkins describes himself as a “cultural custodian” and self-funded the exhibition to coincide with Atlanta’s World Cup summer, aiming to showcase the city’s capacity for global cultural dialogue.
The exhibition matters because it positions Atlanta as a hub for international art and cultural exchange, particularly during a major global event. Jenkins’s work emphasizes the importance of Black American perspectives on Africa, challenging stereotypes and fostering reconnection. The show also highlights ongoing artistic exchanges, such as the Lagos-Atlanta sister city program facilitated by the High Museum of Art, underscoring the role of photography in documenting and celebrating African heritage and contemporary life.
