FROM THE TRACK TO THE STREET: MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN PRESENTS EXHIBITION CHRONICLING FIFTY YEARS OF NIKE

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York presents the U.S. premiere of "Nike: Form Follows Motion," an exhibition originated by Germany's Vitra Design Museum and curated by Glenn Adamson. Running from September 12, 2026, to March 7, 2027, the show traces fifty years of Nike's evolution from a small Oregon running company into a global cultural force, featuring over 200,000 objects from the Department of Nike Archives (DNA), including prototypes, design studies, and iconic shoes like the Waffle Trainer, Air Jordan, and Vaporfly. The exhibition is organized into four sections—Track, Air, Sensation, and Relation—covering Nike's origins, technological innovations, sports science, and cultural impact.

This exhibition matters because it is the first comprehensive museum show dedicated to a sports brand, highlighting the intersection of design, sport, and culture. By foregrounding experimental prototypes and the work of legendary designers like Tinker Hatfield and Eric Avar, it elevates sneaker design as a legitimate field of design innovation and examines how Nike has shaped identity, diversity, and sustainability. The show also underscores the growing institutional recognition of commercial design and athletic footwear as significant cultural artifacts worthy of scholarly and curatorial attention.
