University Galleries of Illinois State University will present "Dreamscape," a group exhibition of 17 paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures selected from its permanent collection by Bloomington High School members of the Teen Art Group. Running from May 26 through July 11, 2026, the show features works by artists including Salvador Dalí, Minnie Evans, Odilon Redon, and Joseph Yoakum, alongside contemporary artists such as Leonid Kosinstev and Janet McKiernan. The Teen Art Group, founded in 2018, curated the exhibition over several meetings, choosing the title to evoke fantasies, nightmares, and visions.
The exhibition matters because it empowers local high school students to take on professional curatorial roles, selecting artworks and designing the layout of a museum show. This model fosters arts education, community engagement, and youth agency, while also highlighting works from the university's permanent collection that might otherwise remain unseen. The program, supported by grants and community funds, demonstrates how institutions can cultivate future art professionals and deepen public connection to art through participatory curation.
