Apichatpong Weerasethakul Awarded France’s Legion of Honor

Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul has been awarded the Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest distinction for military and civil merit. The honor was presented on June 10, 2026, by French ambassador Jean-Claude Poimboeuf at the French embassy in Bangkok, recognizing Weerasethakul's contributions to global contemporary cinema and his role in strengthening cultural ties between France and Thailand. Weerasethakul, born in Bangkok in 1970, is known for his atmospheric films exploring memory, trauma, and political violence, including the Palme d'Or-winning *Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives* (2010) and the Jury Prize-winning *Memoria* (2021).

This award matters because it underscores the growing international recognition of Southeast Asian cinema and its intersection with the visual art world. Weerasethakul's work has been exhibited at major art institutions such as M+ in Hong Kong and Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as at Documenta 13, Sharjah Biennial 11, and the 12th Gwangju Biennale, highlighting his dual influence as both a filmmaker and a visual artist. The Legion of Honor also reflects France's ongoing commitment to honoring cultural figures who bridge artistic disciplines and foster cross-cultural dialogue.
