Heraklion’s Eleftherias Square Transforms Into an Open-Air Gallery (Photos)

The Municipal Art Gallery of Heraklion has launched its second open-air digital print exhibition in Eleftherias Square as part of the Art in the Street (Techni kath’ Odon) Festival. Large-scale, high-definition UV digital replicas of masterpieces from the municipal collection are displayed along pedestrian paths, each with an integrated QR code that links to the gallery's digital archive for background information on the artists and works.

This initiative matters because it dissolves the traditional boundaries of the museum, transforming a busy public square into an accessible, open-air gallery. By bringing art directly to commuters, children, and travelers without requiring a ticket or intentional museum visit, the project demonstrates a model for cultural institutions to engage new audiences and make artistic heritage part of everyday urban life.
