CUHK exhibition showcases Qianlong Emperor's legacy through 150 artefacts

The Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has opened a special exhibition titled “The Qianlong Emperor: A Legacy in Art, The Huaihaitang Collection,” featuring over 150 artifacts from the Qing Dynasty. The show, running until October 18, is organized into six thematic sections covering imperial lineage, tribute systems, weaving, enamels, printing, and ritual protocols. Highlights include copperplate prints, carved lacquerware, enamel vases, and calligraphy from the Huaihaitang Collection, showcasing the disciplined aesthetic of imperial workshops from the late Kangxi to early Jiaqing periods.

The exhibition matters because it offers a comprehensive look at how the Qianlong emperor used art to project power and cultural authority, blending traditional Chinese techniques with Western influences like painted enamel and copperplate engraving. It also underscores CUHK's role in promoting Chinese cultural heritage through its museum, with significant donations from the Huaihaitang Collection and support from university leadership, fostering local and international cultural exchange.
