Mark Manders: Translating Mediums

Mark Manders presents his sixth solo exhibition at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in New York, running from April 30 to July 31, 2026. The show features works that blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and architecture, including the bronze piece "Monument" (2024–2025), which incorporates painted surfaces, raw planks, and a constraining collar to evoke themes of grief, biography, and feminist theory.

The exhibition matters because it challenges modernist assumptions about medium purity by reviving the ancient practice of polychrome sculpture, connecting contemporary art to classical and archaic precedents. Manders' forty-year practice is framed as a sustained interrogation of visual form, where objects function like a three-dimensional book, and the body becomes a medium for experiencing the world.
