Rarely seen Max Beckmann works go on show at Hauser & Wirth

Hauser & Wirth Basel is presenting a rare exhibition of Max Beckmann works, timed to coincide with Art Basel. The show brings together paintings from private American and European collections, including works from the artist's own descendants. Around half of the works are available for sale, with prices ranging from €1 million to €4 million. Highlights include seldom-seen pieces such as 'Girl with Yellow Cat (on Gray)' (1937) and 'The Frightened Woman' (1947), as well as an early self-portrait from around 1900.

The exhibition matters because it offers public access to key Beckmann works that are normally held in private hands, providing insight into the artist's development from his early years through his mature period. It also underscores the ongoing market for German Expressionist and modernist works, with the gallery leveraging the Art Basel fair to attract international collectors. The show runs until 11 July at Hauser & Wirth's Basel location.
