Fire breaks out at Mystetskyi Arsenal art museum following Russian attack

A fire broke out at the Mystetskyi Arsenal National Cultural, Arts and Museum Complex in Kyiv following a Russian attack on June 15, 2026. Staff reported the blaze was likely caused by a Shahed drone strike, and emergency services responded to the scene, with the fire covering approximately 1,000 square meters. All museum staff were reported safe, and damage assessment is underway. The attack also damaged the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and destroyed the costume collection at the Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Studios, with five people killed and around 35 injured.

This incident underscores the ongoing threat to Ukraine's cultural heritage amid the war with Russia. The Mystetskyi Arsenal is a major cultural institution in Kyiv, and its targeting, along with other heritage sites, highlights the deliberate destruction of cultural property during conflict. The attack not only endangers lives but also risks the loss of irreplaceable artworks and historical artifacts, drawing international attention to the protection of cultural heritage in war zones.
