Frank Bowling Foundation To Formally Launch In London On June 24

The Frank Bowling Foundation, honoring the legacy of 92-year-old British artist Frank Bowling, will formally launch in London on June 24, 2026. Supported by a substantial gift from Bowling comprising paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and archival material, the foundation will operate as a charity focused on enhancing access to art and art education. Its first public initiative, the exhibition “Frank Bowling: Driven to Draw,” opens at the Royal Drawing School on June 25. The foundation formalizes Bowling’s longstanding philanthropic commitments, including scholarship programs at University of the Arts London and Hampstead School of Art, as well as support for the Whitechapel Gallery, South London Gallery, and the CIRCA PIPELINE initiative, which raised £500,000 in art supplies for UK primary schools.

This launch matters because it solidifies the institutional legacy of one of the most significant figures in Transatlantic abstraction, ensuring his work and philanthropic vision continue to support art education and access for future generations. Bowling’s foundation represents a model for how living artists can structure their charitable giving to have lasting impact, particularly in underserved communities and schools. The timing also underscores the growing trend of artists establishing foundations during their lifetimes to control their legacies and direct resources toward social causes.
