« La Caverne du Pont-Neuf » de JR s’ouvre enfin et révèle son parcours intérieur
JR's monumental inflatable installation "La Caverne du Pont-Neuf" finally opened to the public on June 15, 2026, after a ten-day delay caused by extreme weather that damaged the structure. The 120-meter-long, 18-meter-high rock-like sculpture transforms the Pont-Neuf bridge in Paris, paying homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's wrapped bridge from four decades earlier. Despite tears in the fabric, JR chose to incorporate the visible black stitches as part of the work's narrative. The immersive experience includes a soundscape by former Daft Punk member Thomas Bangalter, an olfactory dimension by journalist Sarah Bouasse in collaboration with perfumery Odore Scola, and an augmented reality component developed with Snap Inc.
This project matters because it continues the tradition of monumental, self-funded public art pioneered by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, with JR explicitly citing their financial independence as an inspiration. The work's resilience in the face of climate challenges—rain, heatwaves, and wind—turns the installation into a symbol of artistic perseverance. By integrating damage into the final aesthetic and creating a multi-sensory journey, JR pushes the boundaries of public sculpture, transforming a historic Parisian landmark into a contemporary immersive experience that engages sight, sound, and smell.
