Adult Material opens in Yaowarat this Pride Month

Adult Material, a new queer-focused gallery in Bangkok, opens its doors on June 18 in the Yaowarat district with a debut exhibition titled "Against the Grain." The show features work by Thai and international artists including Shen Wei, Oat Montien, Dylan Chan, Gregor Jahner, and Thyme Neelaphanakul, spanning sculpture, photography, installation, and design. The gallery is founded by Olivier Chow, a Swiss-Chinese curator, collector, and critic who was the first LGBTQ+ representative in the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The opening of Adult Material and its debut exhibition matters because it establishes a dedicated space for queer art and discourse in Bangkok, a city with a vibrant but often underrepresented LGBTQ+ art scene. By championing fluidity, contradiction, and sustainability, the gallery positions itself as a platform for artists who challenge inherited ideas of identity, masculinity, and cultural expectation. It also reflects a growing trend of niche, identity-focused galleries in Southeast Asia that merge art, craft, and social commentary.
