Whitney Names New Director of Independent Study Program

The Whitney Museum of American Art has appointed Soyoung Yoon as the new director of its Independent Study Program (ISP), a year after the program was suspended following controversy over a canceled Palestine-related performance. Yoon, a former ISP fellow and visiting faculty member, takes over after the museum terminated associate director Sara Nadal-Melsió in 2024, when the Whitney canceled a performance titled "No Aesthetic Outside My Freedom: Mourning, Militancy, and Performance" curated by ISP fellows, citing community guidelines violations. The cancellation sparked an open letter from hundreds of alumni accusing the museum of censorship, leading to the program's suspension for the 2025–26 year.

This appointment matters because it signals the Whitney's attempt to rebuild trust in one of its most prestigious educational programs, which has produced influential artists and critics like Jenny Holzer, LaToya Ruby Frazier, and Glenn Ligon. The controversy highlighted tensions between institutional policies and free expression, particularly around Palestine-related content, and Yoon's leadership will be closely watched as she navigates the program's future amid ongoing debates about censorship, academic freedom, and the role of art institutions in political discourse.
