Raising the Volume on Conceptual Video Art

An exhibition titled 'In-/Visible Spectrums' at SOAS Gallery in London showcases recent video works by artists from the Sinosphere, primarily born in mainland China. Curated by five curators, the show features pieces such as Zheng Xinhao's 'Not Here, Not There' (2020), Liu Guoqiang's 'Length' (2015), Xin Yunpeng's 'Towards the World' (2022), and works by Li Nu, Liang Yue, Tong Wenmin, and Siu Wai Hang, exploring how conceptual video art can affect perception and everyday experience.

The exhibition matters because it highlights a growing focus on video art from the Sinosphere, offering a platform for artists who use ordinary, observational methods to challenge viewers' attention and perception. By evoking historical influences like 1970s New York video art and Nam June Paik, the show situates contemporary Chinese video practice within a broader art-historical context, while its subtle political subtext—particularly in Siu Wai Hang's work—adds depth to the survey.
