Opening Reception for John Alcantara "Freedom of Expression" Exhibition

Santa Monica College's Emeritus Art Gallery will host a solo exhibition titled "Freedom of Expression" featuring works by artist and SMC Emeritus student John Alcantara. The exhibition runs from July 2 to September 11, 2026, with a free opening reception on July 2 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., hosted by Emeritus Gallery Curator Jesse Benson. The gallery is located on the first floor of the SMC Emeritus Campus in downtown Santa Monica.

This exhibition highlights the ongoing creative output of older adult students in SMC's Emeritus program, a noncredit initiative founded in 1975 that serves over 3,000 students annually. By showcasing Alcantara's work, the event underscores the importance of lifelong learning and the vitality of community-based art programs, offering a platform for emerging artists outside the traditional art school pipeline.
