The Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa will host the first Italian exhibition dedicated to the complete works of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado (1944–2025), running from October 24, 2026, to April 4, 2027. Featuring over 160 photographs from the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the exhibition traces five decades of Salgado's career, including major series such as *Other Americas*, *Workers*, *Genesis*, and *Exodus*. Curated by Pascal Hoël, the show is organized in collaboration with the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and Silvana Editoriale, and is divided into two sections: one focusing on his early humanitarian and documentary work, and the other on his later environmental project *Genesis*.
This exhibition matters because it is the first comprehensive retrospective of Salgado's work in Italy, coming one year after his death, and underscores his enduring influence on contemporary photography. By presenting the full arc of his career—from documenting social crises to celebrating pristine landscapes—the show highlights Salgado's unique ability to merge art with activism. It also strengthens Bassano del Grappa's reputation as a venue for major photography retrospectives, following previous shows on Ruth Orkin, Dorothea Lange, and Brassaï.
