From June to October 2026, Hampton Art Lovers presents "In the Paint: Ernie Barnes and the Art of the Game" at the Historic Ward Rooming House Gallery in Overtown, Miami. The exhibition, drawn from The Norwood Collection, features over 30 works and artifacts by Ernie Barnes, a celebrated artist and former NFL player, exploring the intersection of athletics, performance, rhythm, and Black identity. Curated by Chris Norwood in collaboration with Pérez Art Museum Miami's Franklin Sirmans, the show includes iconic pieces like selections from *Portfolio of Football Art* and *Dream Unfolds* (circa 1996), and serves as a companion to PAMM's "Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture."
The exhibition matters because it positions sports as a lens for understanding Black creativity and aspiration, connecting art with community identity in Overtown, a historic Black neighborhood in Miami. By highlighting Barnes' work, which merges athletic achievement with personal and collective imagination, the show fosters dialogue between art lovers, sports fans, and local advocates, reinforcing the role of art in elevating underrepresented narratives. The collaboration between Hampton Art Lovers and PAMM also underscores the growing institutional recognition of sports-themed art within the broader art world.
