How Liste has moved beyond its reputation as Basel’s ’young fair’

Liste Art Fair Basel, founded in 1996 as a scrappy alternative to Art Basel, is expanding its definition of emerging artists beyond the under-40 age limit. Director Nikola Dietrich says the fair now recognizes that many artists—particularly women and those in regions with weaker art infrastructure—may achieve success later in life. This year’s edition is the largest ever, with 106 galleries (41 first-time exhibitors) and 74 solo presentations, reflecting strong demand for platforms that spotlight new talent.

This shift matters because it signals a maturing of the art market’s understanding of what “emerging” means, moving away from a strict age cutoff toward a more inclusive, career-stage-based approach. Liste’s continued growth and its role as a first exposure to the international market for many artists underscore its enduring relevance as a discovery platform, even as the broader market has caught up to its focus on ultra-contemporary work.
