Floating temples and porcelain heads in the V&A’s new art show

An exhibition titled 'Rising Voices: Contemporary Art from Asia, Australia and the Pacific' has opened at the V&A Museum in South Kensington, featuring an eclectic mix of works including a floating scale model of a Japanese temple, porcelain heads, decorated ceramics, paintings, and contemporary tribal art. The show brings together artists from a vast geographic region, with the unifying criterion being the artists' place of residence rather than a specific thematic focus.

The exhibition matters because it highlights the V&A's effort to showcase contemporary art from a broad and often underrepresented region, but the lack of a clear curatorial theme may leave visitors with only mild curiosity rather than a strong impression. The floating temple sculpture, which recreates a reflection from a Kyoto pond, stands out as the most impressive piece, yet the overall collection feels disjointed. The show runs until January 2027, with ticket prices ranging from free to £15.
