Staff of Kampala-based Umoja Art Gallery Denied Visas, Preventing Participation in Africa Basel Art Fair

Staff from Umoja Art Gallery in Kampala, Uganda, were denied Swiss entry visas just before the Africa Basel art fair opened on June 17. The gallery's booth at the fair remained empty, with a sign explaining that participation was impossible due to visa denials. The artworks, including pieces by Congolese artist Makano, were already in transit to Basel. Gallery representative John Hillary Balyejusa spent two months trying to secure visas and speculated the denial may relate to the Ebola outbreak in the region, despite Uganda not being the epicenter.

This incident highlights a stark contradiction in the art world's rhetoric of global connectivity versus the real administrative barriers that prevent equitable participation. Africa Basel, now in its second year, aims to promote African and diaspora artists alongside Art Basel, yet the visa denial for Umoja Gallery underscores how physical borders still determine whose voices can be present at major international art events. The empty booth serves as a powerful symbol of the systemic challenges faced by cultural workers from less accessible regions.
