The Reale Deputazione della Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro, with funding from Fondazione Deloitte, has completed an eight-month restoration of the Baroque marble floor of the Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro in Naples Cathedral. The floor, designed by architect Cosimo Fanzago (1591-1678), underwent cleaning, removal of incongruous stucco, consolidation of marble surfaces, integration with marble inlays, and final protection with microcrystalline wax. The restoration was led by Giuseppe Giordano, with technical direction by Alessandra Risolo and operational direction by Melina Pagano of R.O.M.A. Consorzio.
The restoration restores legibility and luminosity to Fanzago's intricate marble work, revealing decorative and chromatic details compromised by centuries of wear and previous interventions. This project is part of preparations for the 500th anniversary in 2027 of the original 1527 vow (the "Patto con San Gennaro") that led to the chapel's construction, and coincides with Naples' push for international visibility ahead of the next America's Cup. It marks the first comprehensive restoration of the entire floor area and initiates a broader conservation program for the chapel.
