Florence Ostende has been appointed Director of Artistic Programmes and Content at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, effective June 15, 2026. Ostende, an art historian and curator, was selected through an international search and will oversee the departments of Exhibitions and Conservation, Curatorial, and Education and Interpretation, while also contributing to collection development and sitting on the Directors' Committee. She previously served as Head of the Artistic Department at Mudam in Luxembourg and was a curator at Barbican Art Gallery in London, where she organized major exhibitions on Francis Alÿs, Carrie Mae Weems, and Noguchi.
This appointment matters because it signals the Guggenheim Bilbao's commitment to strengthening its artistic vision and strategic content development under new leadership. Ostende's international experience and focus on audience participation and accessibility reflect broader shifts in how museums imagine their public role. Her track record of ambitious, cross-border exhibitions and her involvement with CIMAM and the Venice Biennale selection committee position her to bring global perspectives into dialogue with the Basque community's cultural richness.
