Six first-grade students from Northeast Elementary School in Belhaven, North Carolina, had their classroom artwork displayed in a gallery at the Riverbend Cultural Arts Center. Architect and artist Paul Holzman purchased the students' pieces, including bubble crabs, dandelions, and a bubblefish, and taught them how to sign their work. One student, Hailey Harnesson, received a $20 commission and an ice cream gift card for her art.
This event matters because it provides early encouragement for young children to pursue art, countering the common message that artists cannot make a living. By treating children's work with professional seriousness—displaying it in a gallery, purchasing it, and discussing technique—the show aims to build confidence and broaden career possibilities for students before they reach high school. Organizers hope to host more such events to foster community support for young artists.
