Fourteen Kurdish artists staged a provocative "Non-Art Exhibition" at Media Gallery in Erbil to commemorate World Art Day. In a radical departure from traditional gallery formats, the participants displayed only the reverse sides of their canvases, completely concealing the painted surfaces from the audience. Organized by artist Ahmed Nabaz, the one-day event kept its conceptual twist a secret from the participating artists until the moment of the opening.
This experimental showcase challenges the conventional reliance on visual aesthetics and the commodification of the image in the art world. By forcing viewers to engage with the physical structure of the canvas rather than the finished work, the exhibition reframes the act of seeing and questions the fundamental definition of art when its primary visual component is removed. It represents a bold moment of conceptual practice within the Kurdistan art scene, shifting the focus from the product to the philosophical experience of the medium.
