Italy Acquires Caravaggio's Barberini Portrait

The Italian Ministry of Culture has acquired a rare Caravaggio portrait of Maffeo Barberini, the future Pope Urban VIII, for €30 million ($35 million). The late 16th-century masterpiece, which had been hidden in a private collection for decades, will now reside permanently at Rome’s Palazzo Barberini. The acquisition follows a successful short-term loan and extensive technical analysis that confirmed the work's authenticity.

This purchase represents one of the highest sums ever spent by the Italian state on a single artwork and underscores a strategic push to keep national treasures within public institutions. By securing the portrait for the National Galleries of Ancient Art, Italy prevents the work from disappearing into the private market, reuniting the painting with the ancestral home of the Barberini family and strengthening the museum's position as a premier center for Caravaggio scholarship.
