The world’s largest light installation shines on a small Australian town

Finnish artist Kari Kola has unveiled 'Lighting the Sound,' the world's largest light installation, in Albany, Western Australia. The work, spanning over 10 million square meters across King George Sound, uses massive beams of colored light to transform the night sky over three weekends as part of the city's bicentenary celebrations.

The installation is significant for its deep collaboration with the local Menang Aboriginal community, drawing direct inspiration from the bloodroot plant central to their identity. It serves as a commemorative act, reflecting on the layered history of the site—from Indigenous heritage to colonial settlement, whaling, and wartime departures—and aims to recognize the past while celebrating a shared future through a spectacular, globally visible artwork.
