The Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney will host Australia's first major Takashi Murakami retrospective, opening in December 2026. Titled simply "Takashi Murakami," the exhibition spans 30 years and features 150 works, including paintings, sculptures, video, and large-scale installations. It will occupy part of the gallery's Naala Badu building and will debut new works created specifically for the show in the vast Nelson Packer Tank space.
This retrospective is a significant cultural event for Australia, marking the first comprehensive look at the influential Japanese artist's career and his Superflat movement in the country. As a headline exhibition for the Sydney International Art Series, it is expected to draw major international tourism and deliver substantial economic benefits to the state. The show positions Sydney as a leading global destination for blockbuster art experiences and fills a notable gap in Murakami's exhibition history.
