A previously unknown sculpture by Alexander Calder, titled 'Stabile-mobile' (1974), will be auctioned by Oger – Blanchet at Hôtel Drouot in Paris on May 22. The small, kinetic work, estimated to sell for €80,000–€120,000, was a gift from the artist to an archivist at the French National Museum of Modern Art and has remained with her family for 50 years.
This auction coincides with a major Calder retrospective at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, highlighting continued market interest in the artist's work. While Calder's most expensive auction records are held by earlier mobiles, this piece's unique provenance and status as a late-career 'Stabile-mobile' blend of his two signature forms add to its intrigue and potential value.
