Michel Bassompierre, célèbre sculpteur animalier, est décédé à 78 ans
Michel Bassompierre, the celebrated French animal sculptor known for his gentle, rounded bronze and marble bears, gorillas, elephants, and pandas, has died at age 78. He suffered a fatal head injury from a fall following a fainting spell in Nantes on April 21.
Bassompierre's death marks the loss of a major contemporary figure in the traditional genre of animalier sculpture, a field often dismissed as outdated. He achieved international recognition by placing his monumental works in public spaces from Paris to New York, blending aesthetic appeal with ecological messaging. His work, which carried forward a lineage from François Pompon, was praised for making animals seem alive and accessible, earning him prestigious honors like the Officer of Arts and Letters award.
