rediscovered sofonisba anguissola portrait winter show 2740681

A rediscovered 16th-century portrait by Sofonisba Anguissola, titled *Portrait of a Canon Regular* (1552), is being shown at the Winter Show at the Park Avenue Armory in New York. The painting was found in a private collection in Durham, North Carolina, after being known only through an old black-and-white photo at the Frick Art Reference Library. Old Master dealer Robert Simon is acting as the owners' agent, and the work is priced at $450,000.

This discovery matters because Anguissola is one of the few recognized female Renaissance painters, and signed works by her are extremely rare—fewer than 20 exist. The portrait adds to the limited corpus of her early Italian work, which is especially prized for its quality and historical significance. Its reappearance also highlights how digital resources like YouTube lectures can lead to major art historical finds, and it draws attention to the ongoing market for Old Master works by women artists.
