The Cheng-Lan Foundation, a new independent arts initiative, has launched in Hong Kong during the city's major art week. Founded by Brian Yue, it supports artists, curators, and writers from African, Asian, Indigenous, and Latin American backgrounds through exhibitions, residencies, and commissions, with an inaugural solo show by Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit.
The foundation's establishment matters as it directly challenges the Western-centric focus of the contemporary art world by creating a dedicated platform for 'global majority' artists from historically overlooked communities. By building a permanent collection and fostering international collaborations while being rooted in Hong Kong, it aims to broaden artistic discourse and serve as an experimental space outside conventional institutions.
