Candidates must be members of the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies (ZDSLU) and can be nominated by cultural institutions, fine arts associations, the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Ministry of Culture, or individuals.
The Jakopič Award is the highest national award in Slovenia for achievements in the fine arts and children's literature, named after the painter Rihard Jakopič.
