8 Standout Shows at the Venice Biennale 2026

The 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, titled "In Minor Keys" and curated by Artistic Director Koyo Kouoh, opened in Venice in 2026, running through November 22 at the Giardini, Arsenale, and various city locations. The main exhibition features 110 invited artists, collaborative duos, collectives, and artist-led organizations, realized by Kouoh's team after her passing in May 2025. Alongside 100 National Participations in historic pavilions, 31 Collateral Events and independent projects are on view. Art & Object highlights eight standout shows, including Lu Yang's immersive digital installation "DOKU The Illusion" at Espace Louis Vuitton, Oriol Vilanova's postcard-based "Los restos" at the Spanish Pavilion, and JR's photographic reinterpretation "Il Gesto" at The Venice Venice Hotel.

The Musée Quai Branly in Paris is hosting "Africa Fashion," an exhibition originally produced by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2023. Adapted for the Parisian venue, the show draws on the museum's rich historical and photographic collections to explore African fashion from decolonization to the present, featuring clothing, textiles, music videos, and archival photography from across the continent.

A burned Altadena lot becomes an art exhibit, sourced from remnants and sounds of Eaton fire

Artist Kelly Akashi, whose Altadena home and studio were destroyed in the January 2025 Eaton fire, has transformed the burned lot at 2650 Highview Ave. into a two-day art exhibition titled "Field Set," held May 23–24, 2026. The exhibit features Akashi's sculptural works made from fire remnants and a sound installation by collaborator Phil Peters, who used custom microphones to record the ongoing demolition and rebuilding sounds. Visitors were invited to sit on speakers and feel the low-frequency vibrations, creating an immersive experience that blends art with the physical memory of the disaster.

The Holy Spirit in a Rapture of Pain

Der Heilige Geist im Schmerzrausch

Florentina Holzinger's "Pfingstspiel" (Pentecost Play) is a multi-hour performance staged across two locations in Austria—the Wiener Eislauf-Verein in Vienna and Schloss Prinzendorf—as a satellite event to her contribution to the Venice Biennale. The work features extreme physical stunts, including a performer rappelling down a hotel facade, a car drifting with Holzinger on its roof, and a crucifixion scene, all drenched in blood, pain, and religious imagery. The performance, presented only once before 700 guests as part of the Wiener Festwochen, is described as a brutal, uncompromising marathon that pushes the boundaries of live art.
