In September 1945, exiled Surrealist painter Leonora Carrington completed her masterpiece *Les Distractions de Dagobert* (also known as *The Pleasures of Dagobert*), a densely layered canvas teeming with mythical figures, ritual fires, and medieval references. The painting, loosely inspired by the 7th-century Merovingian king Dagobert, depicts the monarch in a red robe on a cow-headed cart surrounded by enigmatic scenes. After a fierce 10-minute bidding war at Sotheby’s New York in May 2024, the work sold for $28.5 million to Argentine collector Eduardo F. Costantini, shattering Carrington’s previous auction record of $3.3 million. The painting is now on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of the exhibition “Dreamworld: Surrealism at 100,” the show’s only North American stop.

At SLAM, Anselm Kiefer’s Material Transformations

The Saint Louis Art Museum (SLAM) is presenting "Anselm Kiefer: Becoming the Sea," an exhibition of 40 works by the German artist dating from the 1970s to the present, including 20 recent pieces and five monumental site-specific paintings. Curated by museum director Min Jung Kim, the show features Kiefer's characteristically vast, heavy works built from materials like tar, melted lead, and steel, displayed without stanchions and with minimal labels to encourage immersive viewing. The exhibition was inspired by a conversation between Kim and Kiefer about the confluence of rivers—the Rhine in his native Germany and the Mississippi and Missouri in St. Louis—and makes use of SLAM's grand 1904 World's Fair building.

The National Museum of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh has launched "Bedayat: Beginnings of Saudi Art Movement," a landmark survey exhibition documenting the evolution of the country’s art scene from the 1960s through the 1980s. Curated by Qaswra Hafez and commissioned by the Visual Arts Commission, the show features a vast array of paintings, sculptures, and never-before-seen archival materials. The exhibition is organized into three sections that explore the foundations of the movement, the influence of modernization on daily life, and the specific contributions of four modernist pioneers: Mohammed Al-Saleem, Safeya Binzagr, Mounirah Mosly, and Abdulhalim Radwi.

‘Surreal Salon 18,’ Curated by Swoon, to Open at Baton Rouge Gallery with 60+ Artists

The 18th edition of Surreal Salon, an annual international exhibition celebrating Pop-surrealism and Lowbrow art, will open at Baton Rouge Gallery – center for contemporary art (BRG) from January 2 to 25, 2026. Curated by special guest juror Swoon (Caledonia Curry), the multimedia show features over 60 artists from the U.S. and abroad, selected from nearly 800 submissions through a blind jurying process. The exhibition is free and presented in partnership with Louisiana State University’s School of Art, with additional events including a talk by Swoon on January 26 and a costume soiree on January 24.

Pippin Frisbie-Calder, LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's 2025 artist-in-residence, will present a public exhibition and talk on November 10, 2025, at the LSU Vet Med Library. During her August residency, she engaged with clinicians, researchers, and the hospital environment to create original artworks inspired by veterinary science, using printmaking, woodcutting, and large-scale installations that explore climate change, species extinction, and environmental stewardship.

Expat women in Estonia share experiences through museum exhibition

An exhibition titled "Vahepealsuse lävel. Kõik teed tõid Eestimaale" ("At the Threshold of In-Betweenness. All Roads Lead to Estonia") has opened at the People's Museum of Tallinn (Tallinna Rahvaste Muuseum). Curated by Ouddhena Teern, an artist originally from Malaysia who moved to Estonia in 2019, the show explores themes of migration, identity, memory, and belonging. It features works using batik, mixed media, and tie-dye, alongside contributions from expat women who shared personal stories and objects of sentimental value.
