Sad Cowboy

A 1955 film by Jean Painlevé captures Alexander Calder performing his famous "Cirque" (Circus), a handmade miniature circus he created between 1926 and 1931 in Paris. The film shows Calder manipulating fragile wire-and-wood figures—weightlifters, trapeze artists, clowns, and dancers—while a gramophone plays. The work, now preserved at the Whitney Museum of New York, is on loan for a major Calder retrospective at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris (April 15–August 16, 2026). Painlevé's film is also the subject of a concurrent exhibition at the Musée de Pont-Aven (February 7–May 31, 2026).

Loveland artist brings colorful, bold florals to new Fort Collins gallery exhibit

Loveland artist Annie O'Brien Gonzales, who specializes in bold, colorful floral paintings, is featured in 'The Bright Side' exhibition at The Lincoln Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. The show, which runs until June 12, includes her expressive acrylic and mixed-media works alongside pieces by Laura Merage, Tricia Soderberg, and Randall Steinke. O'Brien Gonzales, a former labor and delivery nurse and medical professor who became a full-time artist in 2004, will also teach a floral still life workshop at The Gardens on Spring Creek on May 31.

People and places

Elisa Contemporary Art Riverdale Gallery will open a new group exhibition titled "People and places" on May 20, 2026, running through September 2. The show features works by six artists: Betty Ball, Carol Bennett, Sherry Karver, Mitch McGee, Dean Moore, and Jeffrey Palladini, with a focus on uplifting summer themes including water scenes, poolside figures, and bright yellow elements. The exhibition includes new works from Ball's Land & Sea series and introduces Sherry Karver as a new gallery artist.
