Venice Biennale: The Must-Sees Off the Official Program

Biennale de Venise, les immanquables du off

The article highlights must-see exhibitions taking place in Venice alongside the official Biennale, curated by the magazine L'Œil. It features three major shows: "Le pli et le temps" at Fondazione dell’Albero d’Oro, exploring the fold as a material and temporal concept through the work of Patrick Saytour and Piero Manzoni; "Lorna Simpson. Third Person" at Punta della Dogana, a major European survey of Simpson's paintings, collages, and films organized by the Pinault Collection; and "Picasso, Morandi, Parmiggiani. Still Lifes" at Galleria di Piazza San Marco, a dialogue between three masters of still life, co-organized by Tornabuoni gallery and the Musée national Picasso-Paris.

“A Golden Age for Whom?”, June 6 through September 20

The Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, will present "A Golden Age for Whom?" from June 6 through September 20, a contemporary art exhibition that runs alongside the museum's concurrent show "The Golden Age: Featuring Northern European Works from the National Gallery of Art." The exhibition brings together works by artists including Beth Lipman, Oliver Okolo, Yasumasa Morimura, and Fabiola Jean-Louis, who respond to the themes and aesthetics of Renaissance and Baroque art. The two exhibitions are housed in adjoining galleries, allowing visitors to move directly between historic works and contemporary responses.

Introducing the Etnia House of Arts Residency Program

Etnia Eyewear Culture, the cultural arm of Etnia Barcelona, has launched the Etnia House of Arts residency program in Venice. Housed in the restored Chiesa dell’Abbazia della Misericordia, the contemporary art space invites artists to create site-specific works during two-week residencies, using eyeglasses as a conceptual starting point to explore vision, identity, and representation. The first two residents, Conxi Sane and Greta Pllana, have already produced interventions—Membrane and The Shape I Kept—that expand the symbolic possibilities of the object.

L’artista multidisciplinare Francesco Impellizeri protagonista di un nuovo appuntamento de I Martedì Critici. Il video

Francesco Impellizeri, a multidisciplinary artist born in Trapani in 1958, is the subject of the third seasonal appointment of "I Martedì Critici," a series of meetings curated by Alberto Dambruoso and Loredana Rea. The article explores Impellizeri's career, which began in the mid-1980s and blends painting, music, photography, and performance into a distinctive, eccentric language. His work often uses paradox and sarcasm to critique contemporary stereotypes, as seen in performances like "Desfilè: mannequin per nient" and his series of "Pensierini"—childlike notebook pages that address political and social themes. His exhibitions span from the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice to the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Museo del Barrio in New York.
