‘A remarkably tenacious motif’: the many faces of Marilyn Monroe revealed in new book and show

The National Portrait Gallery in London will open "Marilyn Monroe: a Portrait" next month, accompanied by a book edited by curator Rosie Broadley in association with the Marilyn Monroe estate. The exhibition and book feature works by Andy Warhol, Pauline Boty, Marlene Dumas, James Gill, Rosalyn Drexler, and others, exploring Monroe as a persistent subject in visual art beyond film. Prokofiev Studio: new gallery devoted to the abstract art of Oleg Prokofiev son of the composer & father of composer Gabriel Prokofiev

Composer Gabriel Prokofiev has opened Prokofiev Studio in Hackney, London, a new gallery dedicated to the abstract art of his father, Oleg Prokofiev (1928-1998). Oleg, son of the famed composer Sergei Prokofiev, created abstract works in the 1950s that defied the Soviet Union’s strict socialist realism doctrine. His career was shaped by his relationship with British art historian Camilla Gray, whom he married in 1969 after hiding his art for a decade; she died two years later. Oleg moved to the UK but believed his abstract works lost until a 1994 return to Moscow revealed they had been preserved. The gallery houses Oleg’s archive, including 1950s abstract artworks, letters, sketchbooks, and sculptures, with an inaugural exhibition titled "Bending Time" reconstructing his 1990s studio in Hackney Wick.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has revealed photos from inside the Costume Institute's latest exhibition, 'Costume Art,' ahead of the 2026 Met Gala. Curated by Andrew Bolton, the show explores the relationship between clothing and the body, organized around thematic body types such as the Naked Body, Pregnant Body, and Aging Body. It features garments and artworks from The Met's collection, both historical and contemporary, and will be the first exhibition held in the new Condé M. Nast Galleries, a 12,000-square-foot space adjacent to the Great Hall. The exhibition opens to the public on May 10, 2026, and runs through January 10, 2027.

Emerging Indigenous artists reveal their stories in major showcase

Four emerging Indigenous artists from Nagula Jarndu, a women's art centre in Broome, have been selected to present their work at Revealed, an annual Perth showcase of new and emerging Western Australian Aboriginal artists. The artists—including Ebony Pierik—created large-scale silk pieces using hand-carved linocut blocks, now displayed in the main gallery of the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA). The exhibition, curated by Whadjuk, Balladong and Wilman Noongar artist Zali Morgan, also features a large-scale art market where thousands of works are sold directly to buyers, with 100% of proceeds going to the artists.
