Memphis is undergoing a significant transformation of its cultural landscape as the city's major art institutions evolve to meet modern community needs. The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is preparing for a landmark move to a new riverfront location where it will be renamed the Memphis Art Museum, offering 50 percent more gallery space. This expansion follows decades of growth for the city's "big three" institutions—the Brooks, the Dixon Gallery & Gardens, and the Metal Museum—which have anchored the local scene since the mid-1970s.

Creativity takes root

Students at Southern Methodist University (SMU) gathered at the Meadows Museum in Dallas for the inaugural 'ArtMix Thursday,' a monthly event designed to foster creativity and community through hands-on art-making. The debut session featured a mosaic-making workshop held in collaboration with the SMU Craft Club, allowing students to engage with the museum in a relaxed, non-academic setting. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the institution to integrate more deeply with student life through new programming and expanded membership benefits.

Delta artists show unique flair

The Art Guild of the Delta Annual Showcase 2025 opened on November 13 at Los Medanos College's Library gallery, featuring works by local Delta-area artists. Curator Sarah Lee introduced the event, where artists including Marsha Mees, Rosalinda Grejsen, Rick Haley, Julee Richardson, Susan State, Carol Ligon, and Kathy Emerick presented and discussed their pieces, ranging from clay sculptures and mixed-media works to photography and jewelry. Highlights included Mees's Kintsugi-inspired mixed-media pieces, Richardson's Steampunk dolls and a ceramic commentary on gun violence, and Haley's serendipitous beach photograph.

Student art show inspires creative spark

Los Medanos College held the opening reception for its 2026 student art exhibition on April 22, showcasing works selected by guest juror Jennifer Lugris. Awards and scholarships were presented in partnership with the Concord Art Association and the Art Guild of the Delta, with first place for drawing going to "Welcome to the World" by Gigi Centeno. The event featured an interactive art wall and drew students, families, and community members to celebrate emerging artists.
