Hybrid Print Shop and Art Gallery Haus Obscura Opens on East Sixth
Mark Mikhail and Heather Slingerland, a couple from the Bay Area with no prior art-world experience, have opened Haus Obscura, a hybrid print shop and art gallery on East Sixth Street in Austin. The space, built entirely by Mikhail using his engineering background, offers artists free scanning and printing of their work, with sales proceeds split between the artist and the gallery. The inaugural exhibition, "Veil/Unveil," features works by local artists Erin E Freeman and Albion Moonlight, and a vending machine outside sells affordable print postcards alongside products from a neighboring salon.
