red hook warehouse fire artist studios

A fire broke out late Wednesday in a 19th-century warehouse at 481 Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, destroying dozens of artist studios and damaging the building's roof and fourth floor. Over 250 FDNY members battled the blaze for more than seven hours, with two firefighters sustaining minor injuries. The warehouse housed a large artist cooperative, woodshops, furniture makers, and small businesses, and many artists lost work prepared for the upcoming Red Hook Open Studios event.

The Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault, Minnesota, is hosting an opening reception tonight for new gallery exhibitions featuring multiple artists. The displays include work by the Minnesota Mosaic Guild, painter Dana Lacina, assemblage artist Trudi Schaefer, oil painter Marissa Shackleford, acrylic painter Monica Wilder, and Northfield photographer Aramis Wells. Wells, an astro and landscape photographer, is showing a series of winter scenes from Lake Superior alongside his signature images of the Northern Lights and solar eclipses. The reception runs from 5pm to 7pm and is free to the public, with the galleries open through August 9th.

Activities included distributing woodblock New Year prints, organizing hands-on printing workshops for zodiac-themed prints, creating portrait caricatures for firefighters and workers, and calligraphers writing Spring Festival couplets.
