Deux ventes chez Bonhams à Paris
Bonhams has launched its annual "Classic Week" in Paris, featuring two distinct yet complementary auctions. The sales showcase a diverse range of works, most notably a previously unknown drawing of Marie Serre, the mother of the celebrated painter Hyacinthe Rigaud. This rare portrait adds a new dimension to the iconography of Serre, who was famously depicted by both her son and the sculptor Antoine Coysevox.
White Cube has announced the representation of Navajo artist Emmi Whitehorse, who will be represented alongside her New York gallery, Garth Greenan. The partnership follows Whitehorse’s successful solo exhibition at White Cube’s Paris space and her inclusion in the 2024 Venice Biennale. The gallery plans to debut new work, including the painting "Father Sky meets Mother Earth," at its Art Basel Hong Kong booth later this month.
A previously unknown red-chalk drawing by Michelangelo, a study for the foot of the Libyan Sibyl from the Sistine Chapel ceiling, sold for $27.2 million at Christie’s New York on Thursday, far exceeding its $1.5–$2 million estimate. The work was submitted to Christie’s online estimate portal last March by an anonymous owner who inherited it from their grandmother; it had hung on a wall for years, assumed to be a copy. After months of authentication using infrared reflectography and cross-referencing with drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Uffizi Gallery, Christie’s specialists confirmed it as an authentic Michelangelo. The sale set a new auction record for the artist, surpassing the previous $24.3 million record set at Christie’s Paris in 2022.
A previously unknown Michelangelo drawing, a red chalk study for the foot of the Libyan Sibyl on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, was discovered after an owner submitted a photograph to Christie's online estimate service. The work, created around 1511–12, sold at Christie's New York for $27.2 million, far exceeding its $1.5–2 million estimate and setting a new auction record for a Michelangelo drawing. The anonymous seller inherited the piece from his grandmother, and it had been in his family since the late 1700s.
Sotheby’s will hold its second auction in Saudi Arabia next month, featuring works by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Safeya Binzagr, the late artist regarded as the spiritual mother of contemporary Saudi art. The auction, scheduled for January, follows Sotheby’s debut in the kingdom in February, which generated $17.28 million from fine art, designer items, and memorabilia. Unlike the first sale, this auction will focus exclusively on art, responding to stronger demand for Saudi works. Binzagr’s painting *Coffee Shop in Madina Road* (1968) will be a highlight.
