Koyo Kouoh, the influential curator and executive director of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz Mocaa) in Cape Town, has died at age 57, just ten days before she was to announce the title and themes of the 2026 Venice Biennale, for which she had been appointed curator of the international exhibition in December 2024—the first African woman to hold that role. Kouoh transformed Zeitz Mocaa from a fledgling institution into a globally respected museum, securing the donation of Jochen Zeitz's collection, expanding the board, and launching community-focused initiatives like the exhibition *Home is Where the Art is* (2020-21) and the online summit Radical Solidarity.

David Chichkan, a Ukrainian artist known for his explicitly political and often censored work, has died at age 39. The Ukrainian culture ministry reported that his heart stopped after he was wounded in battle against Russian troops. Chichkan founded the Libertarian Club of Underground Dialectics in 2014 and staged provocative exhibitions, including one about the 2013–14 Maidan revolution that was vandalized by masked intruders. He enlisted in the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2024 as a mortar operator, after being unable to serve earlier for health reasons, and continued to create art depicting antiauthoritarian soldiers until his death.

Ukrainian ‘artist of pain’ David Chichkan killed on frontline

David Chichkan, a prominent Ukrainian contemporary artist known for his anarchist ideals and avant-garde iconography, was killed while fighting Russian forces in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region on August 8, 2024. The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications reported that he died repelling an assault by Russian infantry. Chichkan, born in Kyiv in 1986, came from a dynasty of artists and was known for works infused with references to Ukraine's activist and anarchist history. His death adds to a growing list of Ukrainian cultural workers killed since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022, with PEN Ukraine recording 221 cultural figures dead.
